I can’t remember what triggered it, but Sunday on my way to church a favorite old piece of melody started running through my mind along with just the first line of the lyric. It was one of those times where I kept humming it over and over trying to remember what came next. You know how it is…it was driving me crazy!
I must have hummed and sung, hummed and sung twenty times before the light went on and I remembered whose song it was and…ahhhhh…where I could find it in my music library. You know, it was like an itch that needed to be scratched!
So I had to get all the way through Sunday School and the morning service before I could get home and look up the rest of the lyric. Yesssssssssssssss! What a relief and what a great old song. Well, from 1982 anyway.
But while I was in agony trying to remember the rest of the words, here’s what I was humming and singing:
“Oh, that men would praise Him for His goodness…”
Wow! What a tremendous phrase to be stuck on because while I was running that over and over and over in my mind it was becoming the real prayer it was meant to be. A true hearts cry…
“Oh God, that men (and women and children)… people would praise You for Your goodness! Oh, that we would all open up the mouths that You gave us and cry ‘God, we all praise you because you’re good! Good? You’re fabulous, Lord! You’re indescribable! Unforgettable! And You always are thinking good toward us, never evil! Oh, that men would praise You for Your goodness!’”
Well, anyone who knows me knows that about that time was when things started getting loud. If the car window had been open the folks in the Everett Boeing plant would have heard me as I drove by.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a recording of this wonderful Lanny Wolfe song to embed here for you. But I do now have the full lyric to share. As you read it, join with me in asking God to make it so.
Oh, that men would praise Him for His goodness
For His wonderful works unto men.
Oh, that they would give Him all the glory
That is due His name from every tongue and pen.
Oh, that men would praise Him for His greatness,
Acknowledge Him as God in all their ways;
Oh, that they would give Him all the glory,
For He alone is worthy of all praise.
I will magnify the Lord.
I will magnify the Lord.
I will magnify the Lord.
According to His excellent greatness,
I will praise Him.
I will glorify His name forever,
Giving thanks for His unfailing love.
In the time of trouble
I will not forget
That my ever-present help
Comes from above.
Even when the cares of life oppress me
And my trials darken sunny days
I will magnify Him with thanksgiving
I will offer Him a sacrifice of praise.
You’re in Boardman Country!
Make yourself at home,
Brad

At least you got something good stuck in your head. That’s a lot better than something annoying!

Usually songs that are stuck in my head are ones I’d rather not be thinking of!

Whenever I just think of the name of certain songs they stick for days, so I’m talking out loud to myself right now before one of them pops into my mind, and I’m not being very successful! It’s starting to creep in there sideways….

@ Psyche – I guess I’ll have to look up Wham to see who that is. Thanks for stopping over.
@ Barbara – Yep. If you’ve got to have something playing over and over in your mind, it might as well be glorifying to the Lord!
@ Maureen – That has happened to me too. Thanks for reading.
@ Corrin – It’s almost hard to remember what our lives were like without Google! Thanks for coming by.
@ A – Hope your mind is free of any “record skips”! Just keep talking out loud.

There’s even a site on the web where you can hum a tune and it can help you try to find a song. Unfortunately I’m tone deaf.
